About the schools print competition
The annual competition, now in its 17th year, is open to all secondary schools / academies / colleges in Ashford and the surrounding area. The intention of the competition is to encourage photography as an art form and to harness the enthusiasm of both the art departments and pupils, thus generating a healthy competitive element.
The competition is managed by a small sub-committee and we are pleased to say that we are hoping to have up to 7 schools competing this year. Givaudan, a local fragrance company, has been our main sponsor for a number of years now, for which we are truly grateful and we are hoping to continue that partnership for this year’s competition. There are trophies and prizes to be won by individual entrants, together with a shield to be awarded to the winning school.
The competition format is as follows:
There are 6 categories: Artistic Interpretation, Landscape, Natural History, Photojournalism, Pictorial & Portraiture (Guidelines are given on the format of each category).
Age groups: 11 to 15 years and 16 years & over.
Entries are limited to 2 prints per pupil per category. There is no limit to the number of pupil entries per school.
The winner of each of the 12 age categories receives an engraved trophy, a certificate and a prize. Each student awarded a 2nd or 3rd place in each of the 12 age categories will receive a certificate. An additional trophy, donated by a former Mayor of Ashford, and certificate will be awarded to a student showing exceptional potential.
The winning school is determined by awarding points for the number of 1st, 2nd & 3rd places achieved by students in each age category and the winning school receives a shield (donated by Ashford Photographic Society).
